Based upon various feedback that I've had about my recent book, First Principles - The Crazy Business of Doing Serious Science, I thought it might be an interesting idea to start a blog in an attempt to more broadly discuss some of the ideas raised in the book and accompanying reviews (see http://sites.google.com/site/howardburtonsite/first-principles---reviews).
I well recognize that this is probably a bad idea. I've never been much of a blogger myself and I'm far from convinced that anyone will care terribly much about what I have to say, but I thought it was worth a shot, anyway.
I have a PhD in theoretical physics and an MA in philosophy and from 1999-2007 I was the Founding Executive Director of Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Ontario.
My memoir of my experiences at PI, First Principles - The Crazy Business of Serious Science, was published in April, 2009 by Key Porter Books and features an enjoyable and intriguing foreword by the great Sir Roger Penrose, so you can rest assured that the book contains at least a few pages worth reading.
